What Is Tennis Elbow?
Lateral epicondylitis is more commonly known as tennis elbow. The lateral epicondyle is a part of the elbow located on the outer side. It can become sore and tender from repetitive overuse. Damage can also occur to the forearm muscles and tendons. The discomfort is mostly felt on the outside of your elbow.
The Signs and Symptoms of Tennis Elbow
If you suspect that you may have tennis elbow, there are some symptoms that you should look for, such as:
- Difficulty gripping and moving your wrist
- Inability to hold heavy items in your hand
- Pain on the outer portion of the elbow
- Pain when shaking hands or turning a doorknob
- Radiating pain from the elbow to the wrist and forearm
- Tenderness on the outside of the elbow
- Trouble lifting or extending your wrists
- Weakness in the forearm
You may find that your condition worsens when you use your affected shoulder. Playing tennis or doing manual labor can result in more severe pain. Excessive rotation of your forearm will also result in more discomfort.
How Chiropractic May Help You
When you become a patient with us, we’ll begin by having a thorough consultation and examination. During this process, we can identify whether you have tennis elbow and give you a proper diagnosis. If we don’t feel that you are a candidate for what we do, you’ll be informed immediately.
As chiropractors, our staff will look for areas of joint fixation. When your joints aren’t moving like they should, it can cause your condition to worsen. We’ll address the joints around your problematic elbow to speed your healing. We also perform soft tissue therapy to further assist you. Not only is the area of pain looked at during your visits; we will adjust any joints in your body that aren’t moving properly. By correcting your overall biomechanics, you can prevent further injury to the inflamed area and experienced reduced symptoms.
As a part of your care with us, we’ll also provide you with lifestyle recommendations that will further assist you. These include the setup of your workstation and a discussion of your sleeping position, mattress and pillow, amongst many other topics. We want to be sure you have the tools and information you need to take your health into your own hands.
